P. Burton Morgan, now 42, achieved this goal in just 18 months, despite being a &#8220;middle-aged mother who didn&#8217;t exercise at all for 20 years.&#8221; I want to hear more <em data-node-id=\"3.3\">RW <\/em>We sat down with a runner and a poet to talk running clubs, recovery, and rhyme&#8230;<em data-node-id=\"3.5\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;After 10 years of no exercise other than raising children and reaching for cake, I started running on my own, mainly for my mental health. For my first run, I literally just put on a pair of trainers that had been sitting in the back of the cupboard for 20 years. I mean, 20 years ago they were great trainers, but they had completely degraded by this point. I just put them on and ran down the lane and into the woods without even stretching, probably too soon. After 10 minutes, I thought, &#8220;I can&#8217;t keep doing this anymore.&#8221; So I walked a little and then started running a little. I think I&#8217;ve been running and walking all this time without even realizing it.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;Then I did a parkrun in about 24 minutes, and everyone was like, &#8216;Oh, that&#8217;s actually pretty fast.&#8217; I looked around and thought: <em data-node-id=\"12.3\">teeth<\/em> Are they cool people in red vests? \u201dA friend said he was from the Frome Running Club. That was last July, and at that point I was thinking that my next poetry show would be about running. So I joined a running club primarily for the show&#8217;s content, but soon I was competing in races and earning points for the club. I then won a charity slot in the London Marathon to run for the NSPCC. Now I want to run in 3 hours and 15 minutes. <\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-12\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<section data-embed=\"editorial-link\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-13\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"embed\">\n<aside class=\"css-1ms7evx e94w1mj12\">\n<h6 class=\"css-1rjs8mq e94w1mj10\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-before\" class=\"css-0 e68yk9k0\"\/><span class=\"css-8lle59 e94w1mj8\">Related articles<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-after\" class=\"css-0 e68yk9k1\"\/><\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<\/section>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;I was able to reduce my 5k time to 19 minutes 29 seconds and run a half marathon in 1 hour 31 minutes. I now run five times a week. The best part of joining a running club is that I&#8217;ve learned about different types of running, such as interval sessions and tempo running, which are now part of my weekly schedule.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;My brother, who is also a runner, gave me a Garmin watch for Christmas. It&#8217;s super helpful because every session is downloaded to the watch along with a specific pace. My watch keeps saying, &#8216;I&#8217;m not meeting my pace goal, should I increase my pace?&#8217; I think I can run a marathon in the 3:02 range, but there&#8217;s no way I&#8217;m aiming for that in my debut race. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;If there&#8217;s a secret to my speedy progress, it&#8217;s that I&#8217;ve put more energy into my recovery than anyone I know. I do 20 to 30 minutes of yoga seven days a week, and do strength and conditioning three times a week. And my nutrition is really on point right now. That&#8217;s all there is to boring. And my secret is that I listen to self-healing meditations every night that say things like, &#8216;You have the power to heal, you are strong.&#8217; Perhaps it&#8217;s just the power of stories and placebos, but it still works. <\/p>\n<section aria-labelledby=\"recirc-heading\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-17\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"inline-content-module\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cRunning shapes my content <em data-node-id=\"32.1\">Running commentary <\/em>The show will tour across the UK from May to July. I&#8217;ve been working with venues as a writer and director for the past 20 years, so putting the tour together was actually pretty easy. And there was real demand. I think it&#8217;s because running is so popular and accessible to so many people. But I hope that&#8217;s because I&#8217;m a single mom, going through a divorce, and have worked fast and achieved small successes, with a few frivolous and silly dating moments along the way. So there&#8217;s something for everyone. \u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not a stand-up comic, but I&#8217;m really happy to be able to take the Mickey out of myself. So my <em data-node-id=\"36.1\">Running commentary <\/em>I hope the show is a little interesting. Some of them are a little sexy, but many of them are very silly. For example, talk about a time when you got angry while running. Or the fact that you&#8217;ve done a lot of running and gotten pretty toned, but you&#8217;ll never get a six-pack because of your stomach. I&#8217;m very realistic about my body and the whole show is very honest. Perhaps sometimes too much. It&#8217;s so easy for a mother to go through a divorce or have everything fall apart. And at the end of the day, I guess this is the story of me rebuilding my life with the help of running. \u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><em data-node-id=\"40.0\">P.
