But in reality, you don&#8217;t need a complicated routine or even a gym membership. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">According to Caroline Idiens, founder of virtual fitness platform Caroline&#8217;s Circuits and 25 years of experience coaching women, all you need to get started are these six exercises (and just a pair of dumbbells): <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">When explaining why these are her first choice, she says they are &#8220;functional movements for building daily strength patterns&#8221; and &#8220;compound exercises that use multiple muscle groups at once&#8221; (meaning you can train more muscles in less time and don&#8217;t have to put in as much effort preparing new movements). She added that these are also &#8220;exercises that can be strengthened as strength increases.&#8221; <\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-12\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Here we&#8217;ll explain exactly how to perform them, as well as how to incorporate them into your workouts and what weight to start with. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"22.0\">How to incorporate it into your training:<\/strong> &#8220;Do three sets of 10 repetitions of each exercise, resting 20 seconds between each exercise,&#8221; says Caroline. This will take approximately 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"26.0\">What weights to choose:<\/strong> &#8220;Start with 2kg and increase slowly. I weigh 3kg,&#8221; says Caroline.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"best-beginner-strength-exercises\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"body-h2 css-7ab1h1 emevuu60\">6 strength training exercises perfect for beginners<\/h2>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"body-h4 css-ijdjx3 emevuu60\">1. Squat and press <\/h2>\n<section data-embed=\"loop\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-17\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"embed\">\n<div class=\"css-1pwwfvr e10ilk1i0\">\n<div class=\"align-center size-medium embed e10ilk1i1 css-1e3dj7m e2pre2a5\">\n<div class=\"__resp-container css-1obz3vz eksj1ta0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<ul data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"32.0\">Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keeping your chest up, push your hips back and bend your knees to get into a squat position. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"32.1\">Stand through your heels and push the dumbbells over your head until your arms are fully extended, then lower your arms to your shoulders and repeat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"body-h4 css-ijdjx3 emevuu60\">2. Romanian deadlift and rowing <\/h2>\n<section data-embed=\"loop\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-18\" data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"embed\">\n<div class=\"css-1pwwfvr e10ilk1i0\">\n<div class=\"align-center size-medium embed e10ilk1i1 css-1e3dj7m e2pre2a5\">\n<div class=\"__resp-container css-1obz3vz eksj1ta0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/picsura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775229980_808_Im-a-53-year-old-PT-These-six-compound-movements-are-all.jpg\" alt=\"Image is no longer available\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<ul data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"35.0\">Hold a dumbbell in each hand, hinge at your hips and bend your knees slightly to lower the weights under your legs, keeping your back flat and core engaged. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"35.1\">Row the dumbbells toward your ribs at the bottom of the hinge, squeezing your shoulder blades together, then lower the dumbbells and drive your hips forward to recover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"body-h4 css-ijdjx3 emevuu60\">3. Get into a split squat position with your knees bent, your front knee over your toes, and your chest upright. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"38.1\">Once you stand up, raise the dumbbells straight in front of you to shoulder height and lower them down with control. Repeat this. Remember to complete repetitions on both sides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"body-h4 css-ijdjx3 emevuu60\">4. Curl the weights up to your shoulders, keeping your elbows close to your body. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"41.1\">From the top of the curl, press the dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended, then lower them to your shoulders and return to the starting position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"42\" class=\"body-h4 css-ijdjx3 emevuu60\">5. Press through your heels and lift your hips into a glute bridge, keeping your core engaged. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"44.1\">As you lift to the glute bridge, push the dumbbells up over your chest until your arms are straight, lower the dumbbells with control, and then lower your hips back down, repeating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"45\" class=\"body-h4 css-ijdjx3 emevuu60\">6. Tighten your core and press your lower back into the floor. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"47.1\">Slowly lower one leg towards the floor and lower the opposite arm above your head.
