I’ve reported on (and tried!) many things: Atkins, the Keto diet, fasting, Peloton, and more. So when I saw influencers raving about creatine and claiming that the supplement (a compound the body uses to provide energy to muscles) can help build muscle and improve focus and energy, I was skeptical, then curious. When the buzz continued and doctors and nutritionists were giving mostly positive feedback, I looked into the research in more detail.

Let’s test it

Unlike many TikTok trends, I learned that creatine is real. These muscle-building and brain-boosting benefits have been documented in multiple studies. And it has great benefits not only for bodybuilders, but also for women who want to stay healthy and strong as they age.

I was curious, so I decided to give it a try. I bought Nutricost Creatine Monohydrate, a no-frills brand recommended by a fitness professional I follow on Instagram. It was cheap (about $20 for 100 servings), available on Amazon, and had great reviews. As with exercise, I knew consistency was key. So I added a scoop (5 grams) of creatine to a glass of water every morning and drank it while working out. (I figured if it tasted awful, I wouldn’t be so picky when I got really thirsty during a workout.)

I’ve been weight training several times a week for years. Then, in 2020, when gyms closed due to the coronavirus, I signed up for fitness streaming service BODi (formerly Beachbody) and started working out in my basement. I track my progress. Find out how much weight you lift, what feels comfortable, and when you’re finally ready to move up to heavier weights.

Experts say it’s the best time to take creatine for weight loss after age 50

waiting for results

At first nothing happened. The scale ticked up, but here’s what I expected: Creatine increases water retention in cells, leading to temporary weight gain. Additionally, like many women in perimenopause, my weight fluctuates constantly.

For the most part, I tried not to think about it and stuck to my routine of exercising, walking, and eating healthy. I tried several other brands of creatine and found others I liked as well, including LTH Power Creating Monohydrate (a supplement developed by the staff at Life Time Fitness Center) and BodyTech Creatine Monohydrate.

then it happened

Six months later, I took a closer look at the smart scale app, which tracks everything from body fat percentage to muscle mass. That’s when I noticed I had gained 3 pounds of muscle.

I was excited, but I knew these scales weren’t completely accurate, so I wondered if creatine would actually be effective. I kept going because I had nothing to lose. And in February, a year after I started, the scale showed I had gained 7 pounds of muscle mass. And the only change I made was a scoop of creatine in the morning.

I also noticed that I didn’t have Linda Hamilton’s arm in her. terminator Back then (yet!), our arms, shoulders, and legs became more toned and we were able to lift heavier weights.

Is my brain significantly enhanced to report? No, but I have never experienced the brain fog that plagues many women my age. I feel strong and healthy, so I’m getting ready to wear a tank top this summer and keep working out.

Are you ready for more? Subscribe to our YouTube channel We offer video podcasts, health tips, and uplifting stories designed for women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

This article originally appeared in the 5/4/26 print issue of Woman’s World magazine.

For more real health stories, keep scrolling.

How I ‘cured’ my tinnitus at age 55: What helped me finally quiet my tinnitus

I had been suffering from double vision for over a year since I almost went blind, but this has finally cured it.

“After a failed surgery, Uresta stopped my bladder leaking.
