I really can’t remember the last time I saw a fax machine. But maybe that’s because I don’t work in the medical field.
“Yes, in 2026, fax will be still It is probably the most common way to send documents between primary care and specialty clinics,” said Jaimal Soni, co-founder and CEO of Insight Health.
Soni was with Segment when it was acquired by Twilio for $3.2 billion, and co-founded Insight in 2023 with Dr. Eric Stecker, Dr. Pankaj Gore, and Saran Siva. The idea was that technology could solve the medical fax problem.
“I spent 12 years during and after medical school training to treat patients and make complex clinical decisions at some of the most difficult times in their lives,” Stecker, a cardiologist and professor at Oregon Health & Science University, said in an email. “What I didn’t sign up for was spending a third of my time on pre-approvals, chart preparation, and paperwork. Burnout is a systems failure that has real consequences, including increased medical errors, less time with patients, and doctors leaving the practice altogether.”
Insight has built a patient-facing AI assistant that accepts referrals, contacts patients to collect medical history, and schedules routine, low-risk procedures. The company is one of a number of venture-backed startups at the intersection of AI and healthcare that aim to improve efficiency in an industry that costs the U.S. an estimated $1 trillion a year to manage. To this end, Insight’s has raised $11 million in Series A funding. luck I have been studying exclusively. The round features an unexpected lead investor, the newly formed Standard Capital, run by former Y Combinator managing partner Dalton Caldwell. Pear VC, Kindred Ventures, Eudemian, ElevenLab, and 43 also participated in the round.
“To our knowledge, we have achieved the first fully autonomous patient interaction performed by an AI model,” said Soni. “[The patient was] “We were sitting in front of a computer in the exam room, with a nurse accompanying us through everything, and Rumi, our virtual care assistant, actually talking to the patient…That intake time was basically 15 to 20 minutes off from the first visit…Instead of replacing care, we’re actually enhancing it.”
Backlogs are a reality for these clinics, Soni said, recalling one gastrointestinal clinic that had a six-month backlog and 4,000 surgeries waiting to be scheduled, representing millions of dollars in revenue. Of course, this is an even more complex issue. The longer the backlog, the harder it is to clear it. But once they start clearing it, time is returned to everyone.
“AI Office does not replace clinicians, but rather helps cut through the fog, allowing clinicians to spend more meaningful time with patients,” Dr. Tammy de la Melena, a breast surgical oncologist and Insight customer, said in an email. “Physicians often feel like they are a rubber stamp in a limited practice, and when they want to spend more time with their patients and come up with better solutions, they have more time than the system allows. Paradoxically, any platform that allows us physicians to spend meaningful time with our patients is a step forward.”
